I think I’ve found a wood I really like for a project Im working on (minimalist computer desk with metal base like so
just an example, my legs and top would be different, but you get the idea.
Anyway, I’ve been looking at slabs for the top and I’ve not been super impressed (or been sticker shocked). Visited a hardwood lumber yard today and discovered Padauk
I love it, I love that the heartwood is white, I love the grain and color and I love that it gets darker over time.
look how freaking amazing that looks!
I can get a 1 inch slab in the size I want for under $100.
Thats all, Im just ha ppy

Don’t know if you’ve looked at the Ikea veneered slabs, but some of them are gorgeous, albeit built on a core of “lesser” MDF style stuff. I’ll see if I can find a “linky” for comparison purposes.
I’m doing a man cave out at the shop— and will use these for work surface and shelving.
This one’s walnut veneer. They are really nice looking and easy to work with .

I did and they aren’t for this project. This is a passion project kind of thing and I really want a solid hardwood slab. Besides, the real hardwood is cheaper.

Nice. I have a bunch of pallets to turn in to 12" by 1/2" project wood and 40" by 3" scrap fire wood.

Check Etsy for welded metal legs. There are a ton of sellers and some prices are reasonable. That wood is great.

Im going to make my own legs. I found a local place that has decent prices on 2 inch square.

Nice! I made some legs for my coffee table. I based them off some legs I saw on Etsy.

Cool. it looks great. I’m shocked you can find hardwood in 1" slabs for that kind of money. I’d actually never heard of the species-- so had to go look it up. That reddish grain is incredible.
Of course, here in CA ‘wood’ is a known carcinogen. And, expensive

It’s more that Californians have to be told that breathing in wood dust is bad for you.

Yeah, someday I want to do a blog collection of “the most diverse set of Prop 65 warning sign pictures” I’ve managed to accumulate . After awhile you get numb— the ones you see in the line at Starbucks pretty much set the expectation that “this is just noise”.

To be clear that’s not the one I have. I bought nothing because I had to double check measurements first

Padauk is gorgeous stuff. Be sure to wear a respirator when you’re sanding it, because the dust it makes is toxic.

Looks a bit like our Spotted Gum.
B y the way though , ask about the provenance because I’m pretty sure you’d be less than thrilled to have a table made of illegally logged timber.
I’m in the middle of an office bench build myself. The top, legs and stringers are Tasmanian Blue Gum (recycled from my old workbench top) while the feet and cross arms come from our collection of River Red Gum...should be a nice contrast.
